What Katraj Zoo is (brief)
Pune Municipal Corporation runs Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and describes it as home to around 60 species of mammals, birds and reptiles representing the Western Ghats and the Deccan plateau, grouped by forest, grassland and aquatic ecosystems. The official home page says the zoo receives around eighteen lakh visitors a year and lists basic visitor facilities (resting sheds, toilets, drinking-water fountains, information signage, wheelchairs and a battery-operated car). Those are the zoo’s own descriptions, checked 8 November 2026—not a count of animals verified independently for this article.

Recent news context (not a substitute for the official tariff)
- Fee revision: The Indian Express (11 November 2025) reported a PMC proposal to raise adult entry from ₹40 to ₹60, child entry from ₹10 to ₹20 and the foreigner rate from ₹100 to ₹150 (with school rates also discussed). Lokmat (16 November 2025) reported that the standing committee had approved the hike and that it would apply from 1 December 2025. The official visitors page checked today shows the new ₹60 / ₹20 / ₹150 set.
- July 2025 deer deaths: Hindustan Times (27 July 2025) reported that 16 spotted deer died between 6 and 12 July 2025 and that laboratory reports confirmed foot-and-mouth disease (FMD); the zoo’s health advisory committee applied biosecurity measures and vaccinations. The Times of India (13 August 2025) later reported that the genome of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) was found in one of those samples, while also quoting that the experts’ report attributed the death to FMD. The official visitors page checked today still lists regular seasonal hours and the Wednesday closure—no visitor-closure notice was published there.
- October 2026 tiger transfer: The Times of India (15 October 2026) reported that the Gorewada Wildlife Rescue Centre in Nagpur handed over a male tiger and a female tiger on 14 October 2026 to a Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park team, under a Central Zoo Authority-approved exchange. That is background about animals moving between facilities, not a change to the published ticket table.
Tips before you go
- Do not visit on Wednesday.
- In the current 16 June–31 March season, plan around the 5:00 PM ticket cutoff and the 6:00 PM gate closing time.
- Entry is sold by height (above or below 4 ft 4 in). Carry that number in mind at the counter.
- Ask at the counter about a visitor exactly 4 ft 4 in tall, infants, parking and whether a still-camera phone is charged—the official page does not spell those cases out.
- If anyone in the group needs a wheelchair, the official FAQ says a ₹100 deposit is refunded on return of the chair and receipt.
- Re-open punezoo.in/visitors on the morning you travel.
