Lingmala Waterfall entry fee
The gate fee has historically been collected by the forest department and local joint forest committees, not by the tourism department. The government websites we checked describe the falls but list no price.
What the record shows:
- Who collects it: in 2015, The Indian Express reported that the forest department collected entry fees at several Mahabaleshwar points, including Lingmala Waterfall. A government resolution of March 2012 allows this. The fee then was ₹10 per point (Indian Express, 3 November 2015).
- Joint forest committees: in 2016, Pune Mirror reported that Lingmala was one of five points run by Joint Forest Management (JFM) committees. The plan was to merge their charges into a single fee of around ₹15 plus parking (Pune Mirror, 21 September 2016). We found no official notice saying what the fee is today.
- What listings report now: ₹15 per person (trawell.in; mahabaleshwartourism.in, page updated 17 April 2026); ₹20 per person plus ₹10 for a still camera (hoteldreamland.com, updated November 2023); about ₹25 per person (historywithtravel.com, 2026).
Carry small change and some cash. Parking charges are reported too, but we could not confirm the amounts. Do not confuse the gate fee with Mahabaleshwar’s town entry tax: in May 2026, a tourist told the Times of India he paid ₹50 per person plus a ₹50 vehicle pollution fee at Venna Lake (19 May 2026). We found no official rate sheet for that tax.

Water flow by month
Lingmala is on the Venna river (TV9 Marathi; trawell.in), so its flow follows Mahabaleshwar’s monsoon. Almost all of the year’s rain falls between June and September.
| Months | Average rainfall at Mahabaleshwar | What to expect at the falls |
|---|---|---|
| June | About 958 mm | Flow builds as the monsoon sets in |
| July–August | About 2,197 mm (July) and 1,807 mm (August) | Heaviest flow, thick fog, slippery paths; closures on red-alert days |
| September | About 657 mm | Still full; Maharashtra Tourism’s peak season ends here |
| October | About 158 mm | Post-monsoon; the falls still flow, but less than in August |
| November–February | About 25 mm (November), under 6 mm a month after that | Flow keeps dropping through the dry season |
| March–May | About 6 mm to 46 mm a month | Thin streams over the rock before the next monsoon |
2026 was a very wet monsoon. Mahabaleshwar recorded 2,120.4 mm of rain between 1 and 7 July alone (Lokmat, 8 July 2026) and 5,551.2 mm between 1 June and 16 August (Pudhari, 17 August 2026).

Monsoon closures and safety rules
- Red-alert closures: on 6–10 July 2026, the sub-divisional magistrate banned tourists from Lingmala Waterfall and the other main spots in Mahabaleshwar, Wai and Khandala. The order was issued under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the administration warned that violators would face legal action (Saam TV, 8 July 2026; Times of India, 9 July 2026). Barricades and police were ordered at dangerous spots (Lokmat, 8 July 2026).
- Reopening: closures like this are temporary. By mid-August 2026, Pudhari reported crowds back at Lingmala (17 August 2026). We found no closure notice for Lingmala after July 2026. In the monsoon, check local news or call the forest office before you travel.
- Railings and selfies: when the spots reopened after a similar closure in August 2024, the range forest officer asked tourists not to stand on railings or take selfies in dangerous places (Free Press Journal, 8 August 2024).
- Water: Maharashtra Tourism describes the smaller level as a place where visitors can take a dip. Do not enter the water when it is high or fast after rain. The main fall is seen from a viewpoint.
- Paths: Maharashtra Tourism warns that monsoon rain and fog make trails slippery and that some paths are steep and uneven. Wear shoes with grip, carry rain gear, and keep the area clean.
We found no report of a death or serious accident at Lingmala Waterfall from the last 12 months.

Planning tips
- Go early on a weekday. Long weekends bring big crowds to Mahabaleshwar’s monsoon spots (Pudhari, 17 August 2026).
- In October, expect lower flow than in August. Maharashtra Tourism calls October to February cool, pleasant weather for sightseeing and trekking.
- More waterfalls and day trips: Nanemachi Waterfall travel guide, picnic spots near Pune and the Lingana Fort trek.
