Every Sunday evening, Thalang Road in Phuket Old Town turns into a pedestrian street market known locally as Lard Yai (also written Lad Yai or Lat Yai), a name usually translated as “big market”. This guide covers the Phuket Old Town Sunday Walking Street: its officially published hours, where it is, a date it will be closed this month, what kind of food to expect and how to get there from Patong or Kata.
Last checked: 15 October 2026. Hours and location come from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Patong Town Municipality; the October closure notice comes from Radio Thailand Phuket (Public Relations Department). This page is not based on a personal visit. Market days can change around festivals, so check the latest notice before you go.

Some travel listings and review sites show a closing time of 11:00 PM. We did not find that time on any official page we checked, so this guide uses the 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM window that TAT and Patong Town Municipality publish. Individual stalls may open or pack up at slightly different times, but plan around the official hours.
Closed on Sunday 18 October 2026 (Vegetarian Festival)
On 8 October 2026, Radio Thailand Phuket published a notice from Phuket Walking Street – Lard Yai: the market will be closed on Sunday 18 October 2026 because of the procession for the Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2026. If you are in Phuket that weekend, do not plan your Sunday evening around the market.
TAT says the Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2026 runs from 10 to 18 October, with street processions from 11 to 18 October. The festival ends on Sunday 18 October with farewell rituals, and TAT notes that crowds gather along Thalang Road, Phuket Road and Surin Circle that night. So Thalang Road is still worth visiting that evening, but for the procession, not for market stalls. The next regular market Sunday after the festival is 25 October 2026. No closure for that date had been announced when we checked.
Where it is: Thalang Road (Lard Yai)
The market sits on Thalang Road in the heart of Phuket Old Town, Talat Yai subdistrict, Mueang Phuket district, Phuket 83000. TAT describes the setting as Sino-Portuguese shophouses lit up at night, with the street divided into activity zones and local food zones, plus local and contemporary music performances. A 2023 Thai PBS report also describes the market spreading along Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee, a lane that meets Thalang Road in the Old Town.
The TAT Phuket Office is on the same street, at 191 Thalang Road (tel. 0 7621 1036). That is useful if you want to ask about a holiday Sunday. TAT’s national call centre is 1672.

Best time to arrive
Thai PBS reported in March 2023 that the walking street drew about 20,000 visitors on an average Sunday, and that it was most crowded between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. The same report said the area could hold only about 10,000 people at a time, so those hours felt very crowded. If you want space to browse and take photos of the shophouses, arriving between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM is the simple way to beat that peak. If you mainly want the evening lights and live performances, come after dark and expect a slow walk.
A practical plan is to walk the Old Town lanes in late afternoon, then join the market as it fills up. It gets crowded, so small bags and comfortable shoes help.
What to eat (and what else is sold)
TAT’s Phuket brochure says the street has dedicated local food zones, and TAT’s Phuket article says the Sunday market is held for visitors to enjoy and try local foods. Official pages do not publish a stall list, so treat any specific dish as something you may find rather than a guarantee.
For a recent independent snapshot, Time Out Thailand (August 2026) mentions grilled meat skewers, sweet treats, fish cakes, chestnuts and spicy papaya salad among the food stalls, along with handicrafts, clothes and plants, and manora dance performances. Stalls change week to week.
- Savoury snacks: grilled meat skewers and fish cakes (Time Out Thailand).
- Something sweet: sweet treats and chestnuts (Time Out Thailand).
- Spicy: papaya salad (Time Out Thailand). Ask for less chilli if you need to.
- Non-food: souvenirs, handicrafts and clothing stalls sit alongside the food zones (TAT; Time Out Thailand).
Paying at the stalls
The official pages we checked do not say which payment methods stalls accept, and there is no entry ticket. Because it is a street market made up of small independent vendors, bring some cash in small baht notes in case a stall cannot take a card or a QR payment.

How to get there from Patong or Kata
Thalang Road is in Phuket Town, away from the west-coast beaches, so most beach visitors come by road.
- From Patong: TAT puts Patong Beach about 15 km from Phuket town: Highway 4019 (Wichit Songkhram Road) for about 9 km, then the signposted road to Patong for about 6 km. TAT notes that the road is winding and sloping. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the simplest option for an evening trip.
- From Kata: The TAT pages we checked do not give a Kata to Phuket Town distance, so we are not quoting one here. Allow extra time and use a metered taxi or ride-hailing app.
- Drop-off: On market evenings Thalang Road is a walking street, so ask to be dropped at the edge of the Old Town and walk in rather than expecting a car to reach the stalls.
We have not listed songthaew (local bus) times or fares because we could not confirm a current official timetable for evening returns. If you use one in daytime, check the return options before you go.
Is it the same as Naka market?
No. Lard Yai is the Sunday-only street market on Thalang Road in the Old Town. The Naka market is a separate market at a different location. See our Naka Weekend Market guide if you want that one instead.
