Places to Visit Near Kainchi Dham: A One-Day Plan with Distances

Within about 40 km of Kainchi Dham (also spelled Kaichi Dham) you can build a calm one-day outing around Bhowali, Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal, with an optional short stop in Nainital town. The Nainital district site places the ashram on the Nainital–Almora road, 9 km from Bhowali and 17 km from Nainital. This guide lists nearby sights and road distances from official district pages, plus OpenStreetMap driving estimates where the district gives only links between lakes—not a full ashram timetable or Corbett route guide.

Last checked: 11 October 2026. Facts below come from nainital.nic.in tourist-place pages, the Kumaon Mandal page for Kainchi Dhaam, and labelled OSM routing. It is not based on a personal visit. Boat and aquarium ticket amounts are not published as fixed rates on those official pages, so this post does not invent rupee prices for lake boats.

Places near Kainchi Dham at a glance

Official kilometres are what the district (or Kumaon) pages print. “OSM drive” is a same-day OpenStreetMap / OSRM estimate from the Kainchi ashram point on OSM to each place—useful for planning, not a government figure.

PlaceOfficial distance noteOSM drive from Kainchi (approx.)Why stop
Bhowali9 km from Kainchi (district / Kumaon)~8 km, ~15 minRoad junction, fruit mart, gateway to the lakes
Ghorakhal3 km from Bhowali (district)~12 km, ~20 minGolu Devta temple; optional short detour
Bhimtal11 km from Bhowali; 22 km from Nainital (district)~17 km, ~25–30 minLarge lake, island aquarium, Bhimeshwar temple
Sattal12 km from Bhowali; ~23 km from Nainital (district)~18 km, ~30 minCluster of lakes in oak forest; quieter walks
Naukuchiatal4 km from Bhimtal; 26 km from Nainital (district)~21 km, ~35 minNine-cornered lake; rowing / paddling / birding
Nainital (town / Naini Lake)17 km from Kainchi (district / Kumaon)~18–24 km depending on pinShort lake / Mall visit only—see linked distance guide

All of these stay inside a rough 40 km day-trip bubble from the ashram. For Nainital–Kainchi road notes, ashram visiting rules and train/airport distances, use Nainital to Neem Karoli Baba (Kainchi Dham) distance. For Corbett routes and fares only, see Jim Corbett to Kainchi Dham distance.

A simple one-day plan (lakes loop)

This loop keeps driving short and leaves time for darshan or a quiet walk at Kainchi either early or late. Times are planning estimates, not official schedules.

  1. Morning at Kainchi Dham — Start at the ashram on the Nainital–Almora road. Confirm current visiting hours and any crowd controls on the Trust notice board or via the linked distance guide above (this post does not repeat ashram timing tables).
  2. Bhowali stop (about 9 km) — Use Bhowali as the junction: fruit stalls, a short break, then choose Ghorakhal or head straight to Bhimtal.
  3. Optional Ghorakhal (about 3 km from Bhowali) — Quick temple stop for Lord Golu, then return toward Bhimtal.
  4. Bhimtal lake (about 11 km from Bhowali) — Main lake time: shore walk, boat if you want (pay at the local stand—no official ₹ list on the district page), view toward the island aquarium.
  5. Naukuchiatal detour (about 4 km from Bhimtal) — Quieter nine-corner lake for paddling or bird watching if energy remains.
  6. Sattal on the return (about 12 km from Bhowali) — Forest lakes (Nal Damyanti, Panna/Garude, then Ram–Laxman–Sita cluster per the district page). Good late-afternoon light; keep noise low for birders.
  7. Optional Nainital evening — Only if you still have daylight and patience for town traffic: a short Mall / Naini Lake stroll, then reverse to Kainchi or your stay. Otherwise skip town and keep the day for the quieter lakes.

Monsoon and festival weekends can bring diversions on the Bhowali–Kainchi–Bhimtal corridor. Local reports also say that since May 2026, taxis and two-wheelers are often stopped short of the temple area on Saturdays and Sundays and visitors use a short shuttle—treat that as a planning tip, not a district page quote, and check the latest police or district advisory before you leave. Local news on 10 October 2026 also reported a Nainital Police weekend traffic plan for those areas on 10–11 October 2026.

Bhowali — the junction, not just a pass-through

The district page lists Bhowali at 1,706 m, 11 km from Nainital, as a road junction for nearby hill stations. It is known for scenic views and as a hill fruit mart, and notes a T.B. sanatorium established in 1912. From Haldwani the district mentions two approaches: Haldwani–Bhimtal–Bhowali and Haldwani–Jeolikot–Bhowali (Haldwani about 40 km). Both Bhimtal and Nainital are given as 11 km from Bhowali.

For a Kainchi-centred day, treat Bhowali as the hub where you decide lake order, buy fruit or water, and pick up a shared taxi if you are not in a private car. It is not a multi-hour sightseeing stop unless you want the market atmosphere.

Ghorakhal — short temple add-on

Official text: famous for the temple of Lord Golu and a Sainik School, 3 km from Bhowali (about 14 km from Nainital on the same page). From Kainchi that is roughly a 12 km drive via Bhowali on OSM. Useful if your group wants one hill temple besides the ashram without entering Nainital town traffic.

Bhimtal — largest lake stop on this loop

District facts to plan with:

  • About 22 km from Nainital and 11 km from Bhowali, altitude 1,370 m.
  • Lake larger than Naini Lake; boating is mentioned officially; island with an aquarium about 91 m from the shore (reached by boat).
  • 17th-century Bhimeshwar temple complex beside a 40-foot dam; bus and taxi stands nearby.
  • One road continues to Naukuchiatal and Janglia Gaon; another to Kathgodam (21 km).
  • Air / rail / road: Pantnagar 58 km, Kathgodam 22 km, Haldwani 28 km (district).

OSM driving from Kainchi to Bhimtal Lake is about 17 km (~25–30 minutes without long stops). That sits comfortably under the “via Bhowali 9 + 11 km” mental math from official segments.

Fees: The district page confirms boating and the island aquarium exist. It does not publish adult/child boat or aquarium prices. Third-party blogs quote various rupee figures; treat those as unverified here and pay only what the boat stand or aquarium counter shows on the day.

Sattal — cluster of forest lakes

About 23 km from Nainital and 12 km from Bhowali at 1,370 m, Sattal is described officially as a cluster of lakes in oak forest (compared on the page to Westmoreland in England). Approach order on the district page: old Nal Damyanti Lake; then the ashram of Stanley Jones (American missionary); then Panna or Garude Lake; then the Ram, Laxman and Sita lakes lower down.

OSM drive from Kainchi is about 18 km. Pantnagar is listed at 70 km and Kathgodam at 33 km. This is the stop for quieter walking and birding rather than a busy bazaar. Bring layers—forest shade stays cool even when Bhimtal’s dam area feels warm.

Naukuchiatal — nine corners, deeper water

District measurements: 26 km from Nainital, 4 km from Bhimtal, 1,220 m altitude. Lake length 983 m, breadth 693 m, depth 40.3 m. The page highlights angling, bird watching, and rowing / paddling / yachting. From Haldwani direct it lists 32 km; Pantnagar 62 km; Kathgodam 26 km.

OSM from Kainchi is about 21 km; Bhimtal→Naukuchiatal on OSM is about 4.3 km, matching the official 4 km link. Ideal as a Bhimtal add-on rather than a standalone long drive from Kainchi.

Again, no official per-person boat tariff appears on the district page—ask at the local boat point.

Nainital town — short section only

Kainchi is 17 km from Nainital on the official Kaichi Dham / Kainchi Dhaam pages. Naini Lake is the town’s centrepiece: boating and paddle boats at both Mallital and Tallital ends, with rates displayed on prepaid booths along the lakeside (district wording). The Danth bridge between the two ends has Gandhi’s statue and a post office; bus, taxi and rail reservation counters sit on the same bridge.

This post does not rebuild Nainital itineraries, Mall shopping lists, or ashram-from-Nainital timing tables. For that route, distances and visitor rules, open Nainital to Neem Karoli Baba distance. If you only want one lake afternoon, prefer Bhimtal or Sattal to avoid town congestion.

Historic note only (not a live tariff): Hindustan Times reported in January 2023 that Naini Lake rowboat fares were raised to ₹320 half-round and ₹420 full-round. Confirm the prepaid booth board on the day—blogs still circulate older ₹160 / ₹210 figures.

Practical tips for the day

  • Start early if you want both darshan and three lakes; hill roads and weekend queues add time.
  • Carry cash for small boat stands and fruit stalls; do not assume UPI everywhere.
  • Respect ashram rules (dress, photography, silence zones)—details live on the linked Kainchi distance guide, not repeated here.
  • Monsoon caution — September 2026 rain reports closed many Nainital-district roads for hours or days; check PWD / police updates after heavy rain.
  • Wildlife parks — Jim Corbett is a separate trip and outside this 40 km lake circuit. Safari tickets and zones: Jim Corbett National Park ticket prices.
  • Further hills — for a different Uttarakhand mountain base, see Auli, Uttarakhand (not a same-day add-on from Kainchi).

FAQ

What are the best places to visit near Kainchi Dham in one day?

Bhowali (junction), Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal form the natural lake loop within roughly 20–25 km driving. Ghorakhal is a short temple detour from Bhowali. Keep Nainital as an optional short stop.

How far is Bhimtal from Kainchi Dham?

The district does not print a single “Kainchi–Bhimtal” line; it gives Bhimtal as 11 km from Bhowali and Kainchi as 9 km from Bhowali. OSM driving is about 17 km. Plan on under half an hour without long stops.

How far is Sattal from Kainchi Dham?

District: Sattal is 12 km from Bhowali. OSM from Kainchi is about 18 km.

How far is Naukuchiatal from Kainchi Dham?

Are there entry fees for Bhimtal, Sattal or Naukuchiatal?

The Nainital district tourist pages describe the lakes and boating but do not publish a standard entry-ticket table for these lakes. Boat or activity charges, if any, are paid locally; we do not invent amounts here.

Where should I check ashram timings?

Use the Trust notice on site and our Nainital–Kainchi distance guide, which covers visiting rules without repeating them in this attractions list.
